The predestined traditions of calligraphy, determined either the superficial forms of the fonts, or the usage of each font. Nevertheless, the calligraphers always attempted to complete and improve the heritage of the predecessors.

In addition to scribing, calligraphy was used in different crafts such as seal making, gravure on the coin, ivory and metal. Learning calligraphy, was general. Most of the Safavid family were interested in calligraphy and were eager to learn it. They were supporters of the calligraphers and gathered their works.
